Between then and now
Mixed media on wood
40" x 40” | 101.6 cm x 101.6 cm
Between Then and Now, something opens. What once felt unresolved turns luminous, charged with movement and color that refuses to stay quiet.
Joy rises through layered moments, carrying both memory and momentum. Past and present overlap, not in conflict, but in conversation—each adding depth, each giving the other weight.
What lives here is not hesitation, but arrival. A sense of power rooted in growth, where everything that came before feeds the intensity of what is now.
Artist Reflection:
I started this painting alongside Pink Went Wandering, during a period when I was working outside and had just finished processing my very first batch of Japanese kozo. It felt inevitable to bring those fibres into the work—both the raw, unbeaten strands and the softer, beaten pulp—an invitation to explore a material that was still entirely new to me.
Because it was my first time processing kozo on my own, things didn’t go quite as planned. The fibres resisted, clumping together instead of dispersing evenly through the water. The result never fully sat right with me. I could feel the potential in the piece, but the early layers kept pulling my attention in a way that felt unresolved. So I let it rest. Through the winter, it stayed in the studio, unfinished but not forgotten.
Sometime in 2025, I looked at it again, and something had shifted. With distance came clarity. I finally understood where the painting wanted to go—not by correcting the past, but by responding to it. Between Then and Now became a bridge between experimentation and understanding, a quiet marker of growth, patience, and learning to trust that timing is part of the process.
We never get to meet our authentic selves. From the moment we are born, the world starts to imprint itself upon us, wrapping our inner core in the layers of life’s journey.
With these abstract paintings, I want to give you a place to contemplate that genuine, untouched inner core that's tucked away in all of us. Take a moment, soak in the colors and textures, let your mind drift and peel back those layers — sneak a peek behind the veil.
Art is about what it does to You, how does it make You feel? Which colors and textures strike a chord with your soul?
WHAT MATERIALS ARE USED TO CREATE THIS ARTWORK?
This mixed-media painting on wood is created using a combination of acrylic paints and a variety of fine art materials.
IS THE ARTWORK SIGNED?
Yes, all original artworks are signed on the front in the lower right corner. They also have their title, date, artist name and a signed certificate of authenticity on the back.
IS THIS PAINTING READY TO HANG?
Yes, all paintings on wood panel and canvas are all ready to hang, most have a wire on the back or, for larger pieces a set of eyelets or a French cleat that enables flush mounting (flush mounting is highly recommended for pieces larger than 48”x36”). My paintings show beautifully with or without a frame. If you prefer I can arrange framing for you, fill out the form below for a quote. Because framing adds weight and volume during shipping you may prefer to have your local framer do the work.
I LOVE YOUR ARTWORK BUT NOT SURE I CAN AFFORD IT RIGHT NOW. DO YOU OFFER A PAYMENT PLAN?
Absolutely! It is very important to me that you can add the piece you fell in love with to your collection, when it comes to purchasing art you should not have to make concessions. That is why the Artist Abroad is always happy to offer a payment plan that fits your situation. When full payment has been made the artwork will be delivered to you.
