Flowing without a map
Mixed media on washi
12" x 10.5” | 30.5 cm x 26.7 cm
Flowing Without a Map feels like letting each moment lead into the next, without asking where it will end.
Small shifts, soft gestures, layers that gather over time, nothing rushed, nothing forced. What was built here wasn’t planned, but it wasn’t accidental either. It was guided by attention, by a willingness to stay with what unfolds.
The path doesn’t need to be clear. There’s enough in the rhythm of continuing, in the simple act of allowing something to grow into itself.
Artist Reflection:
This piece stayed with me for a long time. Smaller and more intimate than others, it quietly held its place in the studio while I moved between different works. I would return to it now and then, adding a layer of paint, a touch of washi, letting each moment guide the next without trying to direct it too much. It required patience, not to finish, but to wait until I was ready to listen again.
Working on washi always asks for a certain softness. The paper is delicate when wet, easily disturbed, so every choice matters. Finding a brush gentle enough to move across the surface without damaging it, while still leaving a visible mark, felt like a small breakthrough. The same was true for the paint, its viscosity constantly adjusted so it could sit with the fibers rather than overpower them.
Layer by layer, the piece built its own quiet complexity. Nothing was planned, but nothing was accidental either. Flowing Without a Map became an exercise in attention, trusting that the work could unfold without a clear destination, and that there is something meaningful in simply continuing, allowing each gesture to lead into the next.
We never get to meet our authentic selves. From the moment we are born, the world starts to imprint itself upon us, wrapping our inner core in the layers of life’s journey.
With these abstract paintings, I want to give you a place to contemplate that genuine, untouched inner core that's tucked away in all of us. Take a moment, soak in the colors and textures, let your mind drift and peel back those layers, sneak a peek behind the veil.
Art is about what it does to You, how does it make You feel? Which colors and textures strike a chord with your soul?
