Just past the known

Crocheted cotton, washi fibres & metal wire

39" x 43” | 99 cm x 109 cm

Some things ask for more room, not just in space, but in time, refusing to be hurried, asking for patience even when it would be easier to move on.

Just Past the Known growth stretches out , unfolding slowly. Attention returns again and again, not to push forward, but to stay present with what is still forming.

There’s a quiet challenge, resisting the urge to resolve, to clear space, to finish. And somewhere within that waiting, something deeper takes shape, revealing itself only when given the freedom to become.

Artist Reflection:

This is the largest wall sculpture I’ve created so far, and it asked something different of me from the very beginning. Because of its size, it required space, physically on my table, but also mentally. It was often in the way, taking up room I wanted for other pieces, quietly insisting on my attention. There were many moments where it would have been easier to rush, to resolve it quickly just to reclaim that space. But this piece didn’t want that.

I had to let it grow slowly. To step away and return without forcing it forward. That, in itself, became the work.

It’s also the first time I introduced long, unpounded washi fibers, fine strands that stretch and branch across the surface like something alive. I’m drawn to the way they separate when pulled apart, how they create both structure and fragility at once. Up close, the piece reveals its process: poured layers, carefully placed fibers, fibers laid down with syringes and tweezers. Every gesture required attention, but not urgency.

Just Past the Known became a challenge in restraint. In allowing something to take the time it needs, even when that feels inconvenient. It reminded me that not everything unfolds on command, some things ask for space, and for patience, revealing themselves only when I’m willing to meet them there.

We never get to meet our authentic selves. From the moment we are born, the world starts to imprint itself upon us, wrapping our inner core in the layers of life’s journey.

With these abstract paintings, I want to give you a place to contemplate that genuine, untouched inner core that's tucked away in all of us. Take a moment, soak in the colors and textures, let your mind drift and peel back those layers, sneak a peek behind the veil.

Art is about what it does to You, how does it make You feel? Which colors and textures strike a chord with your soul?
