A visit to Kyoto is a must for everyone who comes to Japan and it’s only 30 minutes away from Nagoya by Shinkansen so I feel very lucky! Whenever I get the opportunity to spend some time here I make sure both my camera and phone have plenty of space available because Kyoto is filled with traditional Japanese architecture. There are beautiful temples and shrines around every corner and when you walk around in Gion it seems like everyone is wearing Yukata or Kimono. I spotted this girl taking a break on a small bench at Kiyomizu-dera.

This mixed media painting on authentic Japanese Washi paper, it is created using a combination of image transfer and acrylic paints and mediums as well as some flecks of gold leaf. The artwork is shipped unframed, rolled in a tube, it is signed on the front and has title, date, artist name on the back. It comes with a signed certificate of authenticity from the artist

To someone who has never traveled to Japan this may seem like an odd juxtaposition, the lady in the beautiful, traditional red Kimono complete with paper parasol and the modern, almost garish vending machine. But to someone who is familiar with the country this is a very recognizable sight.

Summers in Japan are hot and humid and filled with matsuri’s (local festivals) that draw hundreds of women dressed up in their colorful Yukatas and Kimonos for the occasion. Japan is also a country of convenience, you will find vending machines on almost every corner, you’ll find them in the middle of a forest and there’s even one on the top of Mount Fuji. So seeing these two together is not as odd as it might seem at first glance.

This mixed media painting on authentic, handmade Japanese Washi paper with beautiful natural edges on all sides, it is created using a combination of image transfer and acrylic paints and mediums as well as some flecks of gold leaf. The artwork is shipped unframed, rolled in a tube, it is signed on the front and has title, date, artist name on the back. It comes with a signed certificate of authenticity from the artist

Toronto is such an amazing city, it has that American big city vibe with just a dash of European flair and a healthy dose of Canadian charm. I love walking the streets with my camera and oh those street cars! I just can’t help myself, they’re so awesome!  In the past two years I have participated in a lot of exhibitions in Toronto and people kept mentioning the local flat iron building and the Gladstone Hotel. So although most of the images in this piece are a mix from multiple visits, I made a separate trip to the city last year, just to photograph these local gems and I am so happy that I did because these buildings are awesome!

I love, love, love New York City! Whenever I walk the streets off this magnificent, urban wonderland I have to take pictures, this city remains a contant source of inspiration for me. I have to capture that yellow cab and that awesome mailbox and oh, that amazing fire truck! This city has so much to osffer, to me New York embodies the quintessential idea of the -modern metropolis, if you think of a Big City, New York is is basically what you would think of. The impressive, elegant skyscrapers, traffic and people everywhere, it has the ultimate urban vibe!

This piece shows two young Japanese girls strolling around Gion, Kyoto in their beautiful Yukata (summer kimono's). They might be on their way to one of the annual o-matsuri to celebrate or maybe they're going to the local temple to find good fortune, what do you think?

The title for this piece is inspired by the Japanese spelling of the word Yukata: 浴衣, the first Kanji; 浴 (yoku) means bath.

Cycle City is actually the first elaborate painting I have done of Amsterdam, the city where I was born. When I created this painting I had been living abroad for almost 10 years, long enough for my home country to start becoming new again. Long enough for me to start noticing those little, everyday things, that are so normal that you've never noticed how beautiful they are. I try to go back to Holland at least once a year and on one of these trips my moms took me on a tour of my city of birth, it was like seeing it for the first time. Most of the images used in this painting came from that trip.

San Diego is basically paradise! It is on the ocean, there are palm trees everywhere and the sun is always shining and that's only the beginning. The architecture in this city is absolutely stunning! A stroll through the historic gaslamp district will blow you away with it's beautifully restored Victorian office buildings, scattered throughout the city you will find historic mission architecture, traditional Mexican and Spanish buildings and of course the city has its share of ultra modern skyscrapers. I titled this piece 'Against the Grain' because there's one way but nobody seems to be following it :)

This is a painting of Dallas TX, I lived in neighbor city Fort Worth for three years before moving to Montréal, Canada.

It was the first place we moved to when we left Holland so this city holds a very special place in my heart. When I moved to Texas in 2006 and visited Dallas for the first time it felt like a ghost town. We were there on the weekend and granted it was a cold day (for Texas standards), but the streets were deserted, it was mostly a place where people worked. But when I went back to Dallas for a visit in 2013 it had transformed into a hub of activity, there were terraces and shops and actual people walking the streets, a perfect place for a downtown diva to strut her stuff!

Although the Hague is not our capitol it is the seat of government of Holland. Like many Dutch cities it has an interesting blend of ultra modern and historic architecture. You can wander around this city imagining yourself in the future and then turn a corner into a street that seems to take you back in time. When I was looking for a title for this piece I told my husband I wanted a title that would convey they way Dutch bikers take right of way in the busiest traffic, which, to foreighners, must seem like we all have a death wish. My husband, told me that the phrase 'Dutch Crossing' is sometimes used by pilots who want to cross a runway in front of another airplane.

Visiting Rome was an amazing experience, I could have literary photographed every single inch of that city and I still would have felt that I had missed something. There is just so much culture to experience and so many little details that deserve your undivided attention. I like playing around with these unfamiliar little details you find in a foreign city. In my mind this rebel in red is boldly walking in the wrong direction, she is ignoring the pharmacy sign (which to me stands for health and safety in this piece).

As a frequent traveler, I continue to be inspired by the urban landscape and, in particular, the small everyday items that we pass by everyday without noticing. I am fascinated by things like fire hydrants and pay phones, we pass them every day on the street but we never really take the time to 'look' at them, I like to take those 'forgotten' items and put them center stage. I encountered these beauties on my trip to Italy in 2011. I photographed many a Vespa while I was in Rome but this lovely couple steals the show, they just look so cute hanging out by the water fountain together!

This painting was created to fit the ‘Birthday’ theme for the artist competition of the Artist Project 2017 in honour of the fair’s 10th anniversary. This theme will explore the idea of a birthday party, sharing memories, and celebrating these special moments in our lives. I love observing people and imagining what their lives are like. Vancouver is famous for its beautiful views so naturally I was very excited about visiting this city. Unfortunately we had rain the entire day so there was no view to speak of and most of the buildings had their heads in the clouds. Despite all this I did see the charm this city has to offer, it has some beautiful buildings and charming streets and although I would love to go back there to experience the city without the rain, the weather did give me some beautiful atmospheric shots.

This is a very personal painting to me, it depicts a street on the island of Ameland. This little island in the North Sea is where I made my first steps and where I would spend most of my vacations as a child, first on the campgrounds and later at my grandparents home, after they moved there from Amsterdam. The lighthouse is one of the tallest in our country, and it can be seen from everywhere on the island. My grandmother would call it 'my friend', because at night I would be able to see the light go swoop, swoop, swoop and I would count the swoops until I fell asleep.

Royal Ride

Mixed Media on Wood

36" x 24"  | 92 cm x 61 cm

Collector: Glenn Rubinoff: "I am enjoying both pieces as I have one piece in my office (Take 5) and one piece at home (Royal Ride). It does evoke a certain contemplative feeling when I am sitting at looking at it over the dinner table at home. The history combined with the buzz of activity is very soothing as a medium."

The images I used in this painting came from a special trip to the city of Haarlem for a commission piece. I walked the city with my client so he could show me all the special places he'd like to have incorporated in his painting. Of course I took way more photographs then I needed so I had plenty of extra material to work with. The red carpet you see in the painting was actually installed all throughout the downtown area for some special event in the city that week, it is not something that is usually there so, lucky me!

This is a painting I created while working on Cycle City and Waterways, two large scale, elaborate painting I have done of Amsterdam, the city where I was born. When I created this painting I had been living abroad for almost 10 years, long enough for my home country to start becoming new again. Long enough for me to start noticing those little, everyday things, that are so normal that you've never noticed how -beautiful they are. I try to go back to Holland at least once a year and on one of these trips my moms took me on a tour of my city of birth, it was like seeing it for the first time. Most of the images used in this painting came from that trip.

The response from those who have seen it has been all positive, with most questions related to how the work was actually done (is it a painting, a photograph? etc...) and where we got it."

I took my first trip to Paris in high school, we were packed in a bus in the wee hours of the morning, to drive 6 hours, across two borders, to practice our French for the day. It was a very short trip so I didn't get to take many photographs then. Luckily that would not be my only trip to Paris, in December 2011 my painting 'Toronto' was selected to be part of the Salon de la SNBA at the Carrousel du Louvre, so I got to spend a whole week exploring this amazing city!. Paris is an enormously inspiring city, everywhere you look there's amazing architecture. It's filled with churches, statues and weirdly shaped corner buildings, every inch of this city seems to be designed to be beautiful.

As a frequent traveler, Denise Buisman Pilger, continues to be inspired by the urban landscape and, in particular, the small everyday items that that we pass by everyday without noticing. “I am fascinated by things like fire hydrants and pay phones, we pass them every day on the street but we never really take the time to 'look' at them, I like to take those 'forgotten' items and put them center stage. We so often complain about our cities being old and dirty and we forget about the beauty that can be found there.” This particular beauty can be found on the streets of Montréal.

Montreal keeps surprising me, every time I venture out into the city I come across something I hadn't seen before, even after spending 2 1/2 years creating a dedicated body of work about this island city (Discoveries: Montréal). The amazing juxtaposition of modern and classic architecture and the mixture between the European and North American atmosphere are an endless inspiration.

A lot was happening on the day we visited Halifax. There were a multitude of navy vessels in the harbour and the Queen of England was about to visit. Instead of waiting for the Queen however, we explored the city. What surprised me about Halifax was that is didn’t really feel like a city. Its downtown area feels very cozy and it has a very lovely harbour area with a boardwalk. It’s very much a maritime city where the nautical influences are bountiful and the fresh ocean air is clean and crisp.

This cityscape shows the two faces of this lovely little village in the Laurentiens. In the winter this is one of the largest ski resorts on the east coast that attracts huge crowds. In the summer it’s a quiet mountain village where people come to enjoy the beautiful scenery, play some golf or just stroll around and have a drink on one of the terraces. Every time I visit this village, weather it’s the height of summer or the dead of winter, it always makes me feel like I’m on vacation, it just has that kind of atmosphere. It’s just a fun place to be!
